Rebuilding Together Houston
PROGRAMS

"Revitalizing Houston neighborhoods and improving the quality of life
one home at a time"

Rebuilding Together Houston (RT Houston) successor to PSI HomeSavers is a nonprofit corporation founded in 1982 that initiates and encourages private sector involvement in addressing affordable housing needs of qualified clients. Many elderly or disabled Houston homeowners are physically and financially unable to keep their houses in good repair. RT Houston’s main focus is delivery of essential home repairs to extend the life of and correct health and safety hazards in the house. Low-income neighborhoods we serve include Acres Homes, North Side, Fifth Ward, Kashmere Gardens, Settegast, Third Ward, Sunnyside and communities outside loop 610 in east Harris County.

RT Houston offers four home repair programs in response to these needs. Completing up to four million dollars of repair projects annually at no cost to clients, RT Houston provides significant results in affordable housing revitalization in Houston. Funded by donations and grants from corporations, churches, foundations, in-kind contributions, sweat of volunteer crews and public sector funds, over 97% percent of resources provided to RT Houston are delivered to clients as program benefits.

EXTERIOR REPAIRS
Volunteer Home Repair Program (VHRP)

Established in 1985, the VHRP delivers exterior restoration of homes by volunteer crews, rebuilding pride in ownership, a cornerstone of a sound neighborhood. Having repaired over 4,300 homes since inception, this program is a major Houston community service opportunity engaging over 5,000 volunteers each year. The VHRP is the only nonprofit volunteer-based effort in the City that provides a significant volume of exterior home restorations to low-income, elderly or disabled homeowners in the Greater Houston Area.

Exterior repairs are performed by volunteer crews sponsored by local corporations, churches, schools or civic associations with 15 – 25 people under direction of a crew leader(s). Volunteers are the heart beat of this program. RT Houston selects homes, defines the scope of work, provides repair materials, and couples the crew with the house by matching crew skill with work needed. The sponsor of the volunteer crew supplies tools, ladders, scrapers, paintbrushes, personal needs etc. Able-bodied relatives of the homeowner are expected to participate with the volunteer crew.

Homes are primarily one story and wood sided. Repairs range from scrape and paint to siding replacement, window repair and caulking, door and security lock installation, porch & step repair, wheelchair ramp construction and stabilizing pier and beam foundations. Program workdays are two Saturdays in April and two in October of each year.
