Initiated in 2003, the Safer Home Program (SHP) corrects conditions in the homes of RT Houston clientele to reduce the risks of falls, which cause of many ongoing disabilities for aging homeowners. Safer homes improve mobility by removing potentially dangerous obstacles. Items that are delivered, primarily by volunteer crews, range from new light bulbs and grab bars to wider doors, peep holes, wheelchair ramps and a more accessible bathing facility.
Cosmetic improvements are not considered in the ROH or IRP programs. Prospective clients are invited to call RT Houston directly to request emergency repairs and submit qualifications. Qualified clients may receive repairs in one or more of these programs based on the needs assessment by RT Houston.
Modifications are delivered by volunteers either during the VHRP work days or during the year working in small crews that are typically sponsored by faith-based organizations.
All merchandise and materials needed by the volunteer crew are provided by RT Houston; the volunteer crew would provide necessary tools, etc.
